Steve Cooley is from Louisville Kentucky and has been playing bluegrass since the 1970s. He has toured in North America, Western Europe and Japan with the Bluegrass Alliance, the Goins Brothers, the Katie Laur Band, and the Dillards. He has also worked with Jean Ritchie, Hazel Dickens, Vassar Clements, Mac Wiseman, Rose Maddox, Michael Cleveland, and Art Stamper. Several recordings that Steve has appeared on were nominated for Grammy Awards. He has been a featured soloist with the Louisville Orchestra and a featured soloist with orchestras in France and Spain. He has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry, Hee Haw, Nashville Now and Good Morning America; he has also performed for five US Presidents and the Prince of Wales. Steve plays mostly these days with the Louisville based Hog Operation String Band, and teaches privately.
Steve and Béla have spent much time learning and talking banjo together over the years, and both look forward to sharing these conversations with the students.
